Quick answer

Netflix says improving monetisation is a priority and occasional price increases are part of the plan. YouTube Music and Premium pass 150 million subscribers after a price rise. Prime Australia members move to A$12.99 at renewals from 25 November, two days before Black Friday. Disney+ adds Channel 4's live channel in the UK and Ireland from 2027, and Apple opens app subscriptions to bulk buying by businesses and schools.

Netflix used its third quarter earnings to tell investors that prices could go up again, without saying when or by how much. The same week, Google said YouTube Premium and YouTube Music passed 150 million subscribers, months after a price increase. Disney+ is adding Channel 4's live channel in the UK and Ireland at no extra cost, and Apple opened app subscriptions to bulk purchases by businesses and schools.

The common thread is leverage. The largest services now have enough subscribers, and enough evidence that those subscribers stay, to raise prices with confidence. The ones that cannot raise prices as easily are adding more inside the same subscription instead. Both moves change what your monthly bill buys, so both are worth tracking.

Netflix signals the next increase

Netflix did not announce a price change this quarter. It did say that improving monetisation is one of its top priorities, and that its goal is to deliver enough value to justify an occasional price increase. That is how a company describes a plan, not a possibility. Third quarter revenue was $12.9 billion, up 12 percent on the year.

The context explains the timing. Analysts at Jefferies estimate that Netflix members watched an average of 49 hours a month in the first half of 2025, down from 66 hours in the same period of 2023. Netflix's share of US television viewing slipped from 8.8 percent to 7.8 percent over the year to July. Fewer hours per member means each hour costs the subscriber more, and Netflix needs more revenue per member to keep growing. The company also cut around 1,000 jobs, about 6 percent of its staff.

Advertising is the other lever. The ad-supported plan brought in $1.5 billion last year, and Netflix plans to launch it in 15 more countries in 2027. Live sport, including NFL games, is meant to give members more reasons to stay.

If Netflix is one of your larger subscriptions, now is a good time to check how much you actually watch. If your viewing has dropped like the average member's, the ad tier or a rotation plan where you subscribe for a month at a time may cost less than waiting for the next increase.

YouTube Premium grows through its price rise

YouTube is the strongest sign of why Netflix feels confident. Sundar Pichai said in Alphabet's third quarter report that YouTube Music and YouTube Premium together have more than 150 million subscribers worldwide, including free trials. The previous figure, shared in spring 2026 and also including trials, was 125 million. That earlier number arrived just as the individual Premium plan rose to $15.99 a month in the US.

Adding 25 million subscribers after a price increase tells every streaming company that a well-used service can charge more without losing people. YouTube is also adding perks rather than cutting them, with Peacock Premium set to join next year and audiobooks reportedly in development. Each addition makes the next price increase easier to justify.

When a service reports record subscribers and adds new benefits, the next increase is usually not far off.

Prime Australia's new price lands before Black Friday

Last week we covered Amazon's increase in Australia, from A$9.99 to A$12.99 a month and from A$79 to A$99 a year. The detail that matters now is the date. Existing members keep the old price for renewals before 25 November and move to the new price at the first renewal on or after that day. Black Friday in Australia falls on 27 November, two days later.

That timing puts a decision in front of many households just before the year's biggest sales event. Amazon points to faster delivery, more Prime Video content, and no-cost Alexa+ access, but the core benefits list has not changed. Since launching in Australia in 2018 at A$6.99 a month, the monthly price has risen by almost 86 percent.

If you only use Prime for a handful of orders a year, check your renewal date. An annual plan renewed before 25 November locks in A$79 for another year. If you want Prime only for Black Friday, a single month at the new price and a cancellation afterwards costs less than a year you will barely use.

Disney+ adds Channel 4 inside the same subscription

From early 2027, Disney+ subscribers in the UK and Ireland will get Channel 4's main live channel in HD and hundreds of hours of on demand shows inside the Disney+ app, at no extra cost. Some new Channel 4 series will arrive on Disney+ on the same day they air on broadcast, starting with Maya, Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, and Stepping Up. No launch date or financial terms have been announced.

On demand shows will be ad-free on Disney+'s ad-free plans, but the live channel keeps its normal ad breaks on every plan, and watching it live still needs a TV Licence. The deal follows a Disney+ price increase about two weeks earlier, when the Standard plan rose 20 percent to £11.99 a month.

Disney+ is adding a free broadcaster's content to make its higher price feel better. Channel 4 is already free on its own app, so the value for most viewers is convenience rather than access. Before you count it as a reason to keep Disney+, ask whether you would pay for Channel 4 on its own.

Apple opens app subscriptions to bulk buyers

Since 22 October, businesses and schools can buy app subscriptions in volume through Apple Business and Apple School Manager. One purchase covers many seats, which the organisation assigns through its device management tools and can add or remove at any time. The option is on by default for most developers unless they changed the setting. Developers can set up to five volume price bands. In Apple's example, a $19.99 monthly subscription drops to an average of about 20 percent less per seat at 50 seats.

Consumers get a related feature later. Apple says group purchases will come to the App Store this winter, with developer testing starting in November. That could make shared subscriptions for families or small teams easier to buy and manage in one place.

For anyone whose employer or school pays for apps, this is worth a quick check. If your organisation starts covering a tool you currently pay for yourself, you can cancel your personal subscription and stop paying twice.

What this means for your subscription stack

Netflix is preparing the ground for higher prices, YouTube has shown that higher prices do not drive members away, and Amazon has set a renewal date right before its biggest sales weekend. The services with the most subscribers are the ones most willing to charge more.

Your best defence is knowing your dates and your usage. Write down when each major subscription renews, compare that to how often you use it, and decide before the renewal rather than after the charge. Bundles like Disney+ with Channel 4 can lower your cost per service, but only if you would use what they add.

Expect more of this through 2027, as ad tiers expand and bundling becomes the main way services compete without cutting prices. A subscription you review regularly costs less over time than one you leave on autopilot.
